Eleventh Annual Brian Rohne Memorial Race Northern Kentucky University Campus Highland Heights, KY 5000 meters (USATF certification #KY04056PR) Friday, August 12, 2005
The midwest heat wave continued for the mid August run that has become well known for heat of the competition. With a slightly reduced turnout because of the evenings 90+ degree heat and high humidity, the hot Papa John's pizza was tasty but not in high demand immediately following the race. The Brian Rohne run serves as an annual fund rasier for Northern Kentucky University's Men's & Women's Cross Country/Track teams. Current athletes and alumni of NKU turn out along with a healthy Northern Kentucky, Greater Cincinnati running community to support the cause. Friday's event was a very competitive race on the men's side with 7 NKU athletes in the top 10 trading off positions in the main pack as the race progressed, but it was NKU sophomore Keith Knapp that surged at the mile and held the slight lead all the way to the finish fighting off a ferocious kick by team mate Denny Kramer. The Women's race saw Julianne Hoekzema lead wire to wire as NKU Alum Elaine Koenig was unable to equal her pace on the scorched pavement. Following the 5k event was the free childrens fun run which, as usual, drew a big crowd of future 5k participants. We'll do it again next year in mid August, plan on joining us!
